What to Know about the Honda Generator CO Minder

Mar. 16 2021 Power Generation By Best Line Equipment

From construction projects to recreational use, portable generators provide essential energy for many applications. When used properly, they are a convenient way to power appliances and tools. However, generator exhaust contains carbon monoxide (CO), and although you can't see or smell it, it is poisonous to breathe. In fact, 52 people died in the U.S. in 2019 from carbon monoxide poisoning due to portable generators.* This is why it's important to NEVER use a generator inside an enclosed space, like a garage, even if the doors and windows are open.

In an effort to help prevent CO poisoning, Honda has added a CO Minder system to its portable generators. This safety feature automatically shuts off the generator's engine when it detects a dangerous concentration of CO around the generator. If this occurs, you'll know to let the area ventilate with fresh air, after which you can return to the generator and move it to a more suitable area.

The CO Minder system isn't a substitute for safe portable generator use, but it certainly aids in the prevention of fatal CO exposure.
