Important Tips for Trailer Hook-Up Safety

Jun. 19 2019 Safety By Best Line Equipment

In the equipment industry, safety comes before all else. The way you hook up and handle trailers is no exception. At Best Line Equipment, our drivers prioritize following guidelines and ultimately ensuring the safety of themselves and those around them. We'd like to share a few things to remember when hooking up and towing a trailer:

  • Vehicle Safety Inspection: Always ensure that your vehicle safety inspection is up to date before hitting the road.
  • Tires: Make sure your tires are in good condition. Be sure to check the pressure and treads of both your truck and trailer tires. Also, be sure that the lug nuts of your tires are secure.
  • Trailer Deck: Check that your trailer's deck is clear of ALL debris. Yes, that means even tiny pebbles. When you're driving down the highway, any sort of debris that could fly off your trailer's deck could pose a threat to the drivers around you.
  • Ramps: Make sure that your trailer's ramps are secure.
  • Lights: Both your truck and trailer lights must be working properly.
  • Attachment components: Make sure that all components of your trailer hook-up are properly attached. This includes components like your trailer coupler and ball and safety chains.
  • Ball: Be certain that you have the correct size ball for your hitch.
