Safely operating equipment is critical, but the way to do this can vary depending on what kind of equipment you’re using.

Compaction rollers are no exception. Here are some things to keep in mind for safely operating compaction rollers:

1. Do a walk-around.
Walk around the machine and look for anything abnormal before loading or unloading. Things to look for include:

  • Fluid leaks
  • Damage
  • Unsecured fluid caps
  • Unsecured hood, access panels, doors, and windows
  • Deflated tires
  • Water tanks have not been drained

2. Load and Unload safely.
Taking precautions when loading and unloading compaction equipment can help prevent accidents. Keep in mind the following actions you can take for safer loading and unloading:

  • Make sure the truck and trailer are level before loading.
  • Remove all debris from the deck of the trailer before moving equipment.
  • Use rubber mats for traction when driving a steel roller onto a metal deck.
  • Position the roller where you can drive it straight on and straight off the trailer or rollback.
  • Keep the roller a safe distance from the edges of the deck.
  • Use a spotter if needed
  • Use the winch on the truck or trailer if necessary.

Most importantly, if you don’t know how to operate a machine, ask for help!
