2-Cycle Engine Winter Prep
There’s one last important task left now that you’re done blowing leaves and cutting wood to stay warm this upcoming winter. It’s time to put away those small engine machines that have been sitting in the garage, asking to be prepped for storage.
An essential key to keeping your 2-cycle engines in top running condition for the spring is making sure they are put away in good condition. Failing to winterize your 2-cycle engines can result in costly damage that will need professional repair. There are a few simple steps you can take to prep your 2-cycle machines for winter. Included are steps to prep both a leaf blower and chainsaw.
Lets start with prepping a Stihl leaf blower.
Conduct a general check of the machine
-Make sure it is clean and pieces are intact.
-Inspect the blower case, covers, levers, and controls for damage.
- In a well ventilated area, check the gas tank and fuel.
-See if there is any fuel in the unit.
- Make sure the blower fan is turned off before opening it to inspect.
-Pop the blower fan housing unit open with the provided STIHL key.
-Inspect the blower fan for debris and remove it if found.

Make sure the bar cover is clean and clear of debris
Make sure the clutch drum is clear on the chainsaw and the belt drive is clear on the cutoff saw
The final step in prepping the leaf blower, chain saw, or any of your 2-cycle machines, is to drain the fuel. Take a large drain pan to ensure no spills, and unscrew the gas cap. Holding the gas cap back, lift and pour the fuel into the drain pan.
Recommendation per STIHL is to drain the fuel into acceptable containers such as a gas can for more permanent storage. Leaving the fuel in the tank could cause damage or dry rot to the seals in the fuel tank or carburetor if left in.
